Frequently asked questions
What should I bring to class? Bring a yoga mat if you have one. If you don't have a mat, don't worry - there are loaner mats available for rent for $1. Some people like to bring a towel, but we have those for rent, too.
What should I wear for class? It's best to wear loose, comfortable clothing so that you can move freely. Most "work-out" clothes are fine, also.
Should I eat before practicing yoga? Yoga is best done on an empty stomach; but, if you haven't eaten all day then please eat something light and easily digestible, like a piece of fruit or a handful of nuts.
What should I drink before/during/after yoga class? Water is best. Depending on your body type and the season, you should be drinking around 8 ounces of plain water every couple hours. To avoid muscle soreness the day after any physical exercise (including yoga) be sure to drink lots of water before and after class.
I'm not flexible, can I still do yoga? Yes. Yoga is not just for flexible people - yoga is what people do to become more flexible. One of my teachers says, "if you can breathe, you can do yoga." The most important part of your yoga practice is keeping your mind focused on your breath: in doing so, you literally "yoke" (or unite) your body with your mind. Everyone can focus on their breath; therefore, everyone can do yoga.
Is yoga safe for everyone? The short answer is "yes," because if you are paying attention to your breathing and maintaining your focus as you perform yoga poses, then you will avoid pushing yourself to injury; however, if you are unsure if yoga is safe for you, please talk to the instructor before class about any old injuries, recent pains, or physical limitations you may have.
What is Vinyasa Flow yoga? Vinyasa Flow yoga is a style of Hatha Yoga characterized by flowing movements and fluid transitions between poses. Vinyasa is a word that means "to link movement with breath." This style of yoga, unlike other forms of Hatha yoga, will increase cardiovascular tone, improve muscle definition, decrease fat mass, and improve sleep when practiced regularly (2-3 times/week).
Is yoga a religion? No. Yoga is a complete system of physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Yoga does not require that you adhere to a specific set of beliefs.
What is that funny language my teacher sometimes uses? The language of yoga is Sanskrit, like the language of ballet is French. Your teacher may tell you the name of the pose you are doing in Sanskrit simply for your edification and to avoid confusion in translation. Some yoga teachers don't use Sanskrit at all, but others use only the Sanskrit names of poses. It's best to know both in case you ever want to take a yoga class elsewhere and the translations are a little different; Sanskrit is universal.
